League Results, Nov 2021 - Feb 2022

Several hard-fought draws over the winter and a couple of stunning victories have kept Sandwich in the running in all three main Thanet & East Kent Chess League competitions. Outstanding among the victories must be Sandwich’s February 6-1 win over Broadstairs in the Millar Cup, notwithstanding their sub-par side, which sees us standing 3rd behind Bridge and Folkestone. Meanwhile, a win away to Broadstairs and a draw against Margate still leave Sandwich languishing near the bottom of the table in the Steele Cup, but a lot hinges on our COVID-postponed match against Folkestone, a win in which could catapult us to 2nd on game points.

News just in! A dramatic 3-1 win away to Ramsgate on 1st March puts us 2nd above the start-of-season favourites in the Walker Shield standings, on the strength of an extra half a game point. However, Bridge are now well out in front, and Folkestone have two matches in hand against us, so it won’t be easy to hold station in the final stages of the season. Our upcoming rematches against Bridge and Folkestone will be crucial encounters.

The Individual Buzzer tournament at Sheldwich Primary School on Friday 18th March 2022 will provide an opportunity for individual glory, to add to our team success in the League’s Team Quickplay, which Sandwich hosted on 7th December 2021 and won with our own killer quartet of Robert Starley, Harry Sharples, John Thorley and blitz demon Mark Towlson.
