SANDWICH Junior CHESS Club

You’re never too young, or too old, to start playing chess! Our junior club welcomes players from ages 6 to 18. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned tournament player, there’s a place for you at Sandwich Junior Chess Club. The club meets on Friday afternoons (termtime only) 4:45 - 6:15pm at St Clement’s Hall, Sandwich CT13 9EH. See our Calendar for full details.

Coaching is led by two experienced and DBS-checked trainers, Harry Sharples and Jon Hunt, who have coached teams and individuals to local and national success. You can view some of Harry and Jon’s recent games on our Novelties page.

We are delighted to announce that Sandwich Junior Chess Club has become one of the first junior chess clubs in the country to be accepted onto the English Chess Federation’s new Junior Development Pathway Scheme. Our Level 2 accreditation is valid until 2025.

Parents/guardians are not expected to stay but are welcome to do so, especially on the first visit when they should also provide essential contact and safeguarding information (if they have not already done so online - see below). Children should be dropped off and picked up inside the hall, and parents are asked to ensure that they have arranged for a responsible adult to do this in their place when they are unavailable. We cannot take responsibility for the safety of the children in our care once they have left the hall.

Junior fees are £2.50 a week in cash at the door or via GoCardless direct debit agreement.

Experienced juniors who reach a suitable playing standard may be invited to attend the adult club to continue their chess journey.

With apologies, our hopes to launch a second club in Deal from September 2023 have been dashed for operational reasons, but we do hope that Deal juniors interested in attending a chess club will come and find us in Sandwich!
